Song Review: ‘True Colors’ by Of Virtue

Michigan-based metalcore band Of Virtue freshly released a song called ‘True Colors’, foreshadowing to their soon to be released new album Omen, scheduled to be put out in the world on September 29th.

Since 2009, the quartet created their own sonorous universe, mixing melodious vocals and heavy old-school metalcore.

This new single is melodious, extremely catchy with an earworm for a chorus, drums that definitely make you want to headbang, and a revisited song structure to balance out the lightly predictable tunes. With lyrics portraying a harmful person at one end of a relationship and calling out their manipulative, upsetting behavior, this song shows Of Virtue’s ability to convey resentment in an incredibly straight-forward way.

Every part of the song is a new discovery, thanks to lead singer Tyler Ennis and guitarist and vocalist Damon Austen Tate, who seem to be the perfect match for a clean and harsh duo. The pre-chorus brings both of their voices together in what sounds like a conversation, one complementing the other. One part of the song that sticks out a lot is this ingenious sort of interlude right before the second chorus. Separating the song in half, it does a perfect job at refreshing the whole single.

“You have no spine!”

With dynamic drums and guitars, your anticipation keeps building throughout the song, until the awaited breakdown hits. Stink-face assured! As the song fades out to its end, you can already hear it replay over and over in your head, even on first listen.
