Song Review: ‘You could break my heart’ by Maddie Regent

Rising indie-pop star Maddie Regent released her new single ‘You could break my heart’ on October 11th. Having started making music when she was just 12 years old, the singer has now made a career out of it. With this new track, Maddie delves deeper into the feelings that come with falling in love.

Produced by and co-written with her boyfriend Cade Hoppe, ‘You could break my heart’ features raw, delicate vocals with complex instrumentals, making the song an interesting and heartfelt listen. Listeners of Gracie Abrams and Lizzy McAlpine will certainly appreciate this song too.

The lyrics focus on the feelings of falling in love, Maddie explains: “‘You could break my heart’ is about the helplessness that comes with falling in love—how we give someone our heart, knowing full well that they could break it”. She elaborates “Sometimes love makes us blind enough to romanticise the heartbreak.”

Maddie Regent has previously released two EPs and built her fanbase along the way. She combines (indie-)pop sounds with honest and personal lyricism as well as delicate vocals. ‘You could break my heart’ is her next step towards solidifying her sound.
