Album Review: ‘All I Ever Want Is Everything’ by Blu DeTiger

On March 29th, Blu DeTiger released her highly anticipated debut studio album titled All I Every Want Is Everything. The New York-based artist has established herself a name in the music scene after working with people such as Olivia Rodrigo, FLETCHER, Towa Bird and Bleachers.

Not only has Blu DeTiger played plenty of festivals and her own concerts, she has also supported Sabrina Carpenter and Charlie Puth on their North American tours.

The album opens with a beautiful lullaby-like intro called ‘Intro to Everything’. Even though the song is only 32 seconds long, the first tones of Blu DeTiger’s signature instrument, the bass guitar, can already be heard. This introduction to All I Ever Want Is Everything gives the listener a nice preview of how the subsequent tracks are going to sound like. After the intro, the album is starting off strong with the artist’s latest single ‘Latency’. DeTiger’s usual musical style is pop, but with the help of crisp drum beats and vibrant bass tones this song leans more towards the rock direction. According to the 26-year-old, she likes to make music that gives her listeners the feeling of being a badass, which ‘Latency’ succeeds in doing very well. The song has a quite long instrumental outro which gives the listener a moment to take in the overall vibes and sound of this album.

After a fast start into the album, we’re slowing down a bit with the third track ‘Expensive Money’. Contrary to the previous track, this song is a big pop moment. DeTiger’s voice softens, but that doesn’t take away her confidence and sass. For her next song ‘I’ll never tell’, Blu DeTiger keeps the sweet tone in her voice. That’s until we get to the pre-chorus where she sings with more power and rage: “You’re callin’, you gotta stop / I’m already out of range / Scrape your heart off the sidewalk”. Towards the end of ‘I’ll never tell’ the instrumental from ‘Intro to Everything’ is being played again which is a nice connection between the songs on the album.

The following track is one of the three songs that were released prior to the album. ‘Dangerous Game’ is a clear standout on Blu DeTiger’s debut album and currently in her top five most popular songs on Spotify. Which is not surprising because the fun melody combined with the cheeky lyrics make this song a real bop. “Call me Yoko Ono, I’ll break up the band”, sings DeTiger teasingly, referring to the woman who was accused of breaking up the Beatles in the 1970s. ‘All I Ever Want Is Everything’ offers us a variety of sounds and that is also proven with ‘Moxie’. The jingle-accompanying song is about looking back on a past relationship and although you are still thinking about them (“Still I carry these mistakes, all this weight on my chest”) you wish them the best (“I hope you found another, Someone to love you better”).

In the final single that was released before the album, ‘Kiss’, DeTiger once again offers a sweet voice which gives the music an emotional touch and makes the lyrics feel very genuine. According to Blu DeTiger ‘Kiss’ is about seeing someone after a breakup, realising why you were wrong for each other but wanting to feel that love again for one more night. Leaning into the genre of pop-punk, this song is another standout from this album. Of course, Blu DeTiger did not miss out on collabing with other amazing artists. Australian artist Mallrat is featured on ‘Cut Me Down’ which was released last October. Although the lyrics are sad, Blu and Mallrat successfully were able to turn ‘Cut Me Down’ into an upbeat song. It comes as no surprise to find a dance-track like this on Blu DeTiger’s album, as she has a history with DJing clubs. To calm down after these energetic and upbeat tracks, the next song is very sad and slow, yet also beautiful. ‘Imposter Syndrome’ is opposing Blu’s usual confident image and therefore gives the listener a contrast from the other tracks. The slow and short song is a perfect way to give the album another boost before we get to the last third of the album.

Back to Blu DeTiger’s usual confident and cool self, ‘Hey You’ captivates you again in an instant. The sassy lyrics are about wanting attention and she even boasts of being named on the Forbes’ 30 Under 30 last year. The eleventh song on All I Ever Want Is Everything is another collaboration- this time with American synth-pop duo Magdalena Bay. Once you get to ‘Disappearing’, if you are listening through the album in order, the song gives the listener an almost nostalgic feeling. Lyrics like “You don’t know about us, You don’t know about disappearing” make the song feel youthful. A clear stand out on ‘Disappearing’ is once again Blu’s bass, that matches very well with the tune and makes it remarkable. Like ‘Imposter Syndrome’ the next track is quite slow as well. Though ‘Sad Girl Machine’ is lyric-wise a sad one, the drums and bass playing in the background bring a bit of motion and beat into the tune. Being in your bedroom by yourself while listening to Lana Del Rey is the theme of the song, which makes it very relatable for young people.

As the album slowly comes to an end, DeTiger delivers another big performance with the last two songs. ‘Overdrive’ is a restless and rageful song while ‘You Say’ is another slow song that rounds off the album in a great way. The beat slowly builds up to a climax and then slows down again in the end, finishing up with Blu singing repeatedly “and ever, and ever, and ever, and ever”.

In retrospect, Blu DeTiger did not disappoint with her debut album All I Ever Want Is Everything! Some elements, such as the magnificent use of bass, were to be expected but she has also revealed new sides of herself to the audience. The fact that Blu DeTiger released an intriguing album like this at the age of just 26 is only promising for the rest of her career.
