Song Review: ‘Dizzy’ by Mira Taylor

On October 18th, singer-songwriter Mira Taylor released her new song ‘Dizzy’, a touching track about getting lost in your thoughts and worries; it’s a perfect anthem for indie girls and overthinkers.

The beginning is proof of just what an acoustic guitar can do within three seconds – create an atmosphere that immediately pulls you into the song, immersing you in it. This effect is enhanced by lyrics that are so genuine and honest, they seem to be taken from a diary entry.

In the chorus metaphors take over and the words bleed into one another as a continuous stream of consciousness creates the feeling of dizziness Mira is singing about. The song is about going back and forth in a relationship, doubting yourself and the other person, eventually ending up in a maze of self-sabotage. One very poignant line is the lyric: “There’s never a guarantee that I’m not making up why you’re so mad at me.” It never becomes quite clear what the issue in the relationship is which basically sums up the problem the narrator has: Many things are going wrong to the point where you can’t be sure anymore what exactly the problem is.

The best part of the song comes with its bridge. Here, the track picks up the pace and builds itself up to its explosion before leading into the penultimate chorus, the calm after the storm. While bridges sometimes appear to have been created in a mere afterthought, in this case it is the heart and the soul of the song.

Despite its sombre lyrics, the song has a fairytale vibe to it and if you are a fan of artists such as Lizzy Alpine and Paris Paloma, you are likely to enjoy Mira Taylor’s music too. Her discography includes plenty of beautiful, heartfelt guitar ballads, a collection to which ‘Dizzy’ is the perfect introduction.
